Description:

From the manufacturer: This wide-angle lens is the most advanced version of the legendary Distagon, a high performance lens with close focus capabilities, that was first introduced in 1961. The Distagon T* 2,8/25 is a recalculation of this design for use with modern SLRs and DSLRs using either full-frame or smaller sensors. The close-focus capability increases the versatility of this lens, providing a wider perspective than the usual macro focal lengths. Combined with a digital SLR with a 1.5 crop factor, the lens has an effective focal length of 38 mm and becomes a moderate wide-angle lens. The Distagon T* 2,8/25 is available with the F bayonet (ZF), K bayonet (ZK) and M42 (ZS) lens mounts and is
ideally suited for nature and landscape photography or for any situation requiring a wider perspective.

It took me a while to get used to this lens - at middle distances or shorter the plane of focus is obviously not flat and if you were expecting it to be, as I was, then it can seem disappointing. But in actual use out in the wild its rendering is fabulous and 3D-like. Although the 21mm is a better lens in that regard when I need to use a more compact wide-angle then this is the one I take. It is smaller than the 28mm and the 35mm.
I was on a recent trip to NZ and thought I would use the 21mm the whole time - in fact it was the 25mm that saw the bulk of the use it is that good. If I was doing close up photography though the 21mm is far better as the 25mm shows its strong personality in that situation. Sometimes that personality is welcome and sometimes it isn't. For that reason alone I will give this lens a 9. If you shoot at middle to long distances only then it is a 10.
