Maybe I should pre-emptively disable the Polls feature here. Seriously, what do you think?
I can't think of a convincing reason to disable polls on some topics merely because they happen to be popular. It's probably better to let those who are interested take the sides they prefer, and those who are not interested can surely find other topics to discuss. I choose Zeiss out of preference, but it is always interesting to hear the advocates of other systems.

Hi Alex, I wouldn't consider disabling polls only on selective topics. I was just wondering if having polls at all was good or not for the forums.

I dont think polls serve much of a purpose as such. They can be interesting reads, but I would not buy anything based on one!
The variables are too great. We all use the stuff differently and that presents problems in evaluating cameras and lenses.
I simply like lenses and cameras and try to find out what a certain lens can do and use it for that - same with cameras.

I guess having the same thread or poll posted over and over is a measure of success for a forum. After all, people usually (but not always!) wait until the thread topic has move off the first page before starting the same topic. In that regard, I'll be pleased to see our second and third "Digital Ikon when?" and "ZI vs Leica M" threads :).
I have the same view as Tom, here, in that I wouldn't make a buying decision on the basis of a forum poll, which I'd treat as a 'just for fun' thing. When buying, I'd do a little more research than that, same as most people who intend to spend a bit of money on a significant purchase.
But that said, I'm always interested to see what others say ; whether it's about something I already have (nice to have reinforcements of one's own opinion!) or something I may be thinking about. The polls by themselves (clearly I'm talking about my experiences of other forums, as this forum is still very new) don't have a great deal of intrinsic value. (Incidentally, I knew what Amin meant about not being selective on polls, it was I who expressed myself rather poorly!) You very quickly pick up a view on who has plenty of experience in one piece of kit or another, and what weight can be attached to their views.

Polls can be fun at times ... and there will be people rocking up to this forum occasionally who are totally new to the whole forum internet thing. Surely we can't deny them that simple pleasure! :p

Sounds good. We'll keep the poll feature :).

And please don't forget ... "do black lenses look better on black or chrome/silver cameras and vice versa?"

Steady on Brian, let's not get carried away here ; everybody knows that a black/black ZI is The Business, and 'Leica is for Losers'...
