Greetings all from Cape Town,
I was just checking fleabay while on vacation here for the WC and came across this:

Is Canon glass really becoming that expensive? Not a month ago I purhased the same lens for $129 and shipping,...
Any thought?

At this recent wedding I attended I was rather taken aback by the number of Canon DSLR's there (at least half a dozen). I am not saying it is a bad thing...every single DSLR camera there was a Canon...a whole slew of models from 500 to 2500 in price...not a single prime lens all of them were AF zooms. I had the only Nikon and mine is an ancient mechanical/electrical Nikon at that and everyone was checking out my Contaflex like it was a space rock or something...I think the twenty somethings are going Canon for some reason.

That is high. I am used to $150 being a Max on the Canon 50/1.8, and $250~$300 being the norm for the 50/1.4.
The Black Canon 50/1.8 is subject to damage on the surface behind the aperture. If this one was PERFECT and someone HAD to have it- and had too much money, I guess they would bid that.
Between the Black Canon 50/1.8 and the Chrome Serenar- the latter can usually be found without internal damage.
See this album:

for images with the Canon 50/1.8 with some damage on the surface behind the aperture.
In August, I will be"thinning the herd". This lens is going up for $75+shipping.

I`m inclined to agree with but with the provisio that one mans perfect is another makes good. I`ve seen glass on fleabay that has gouges in the front element that was advertised as "near(?) perfect". Most are a little more honest in thier grading and I`ve yet to be burned but on the other hand, if I had a cherry P or 7, I`d want a perfect 50 as a period companion for it: nothing else would look right.
That J-8 you did up for me is working quite well here in South Africa BTW. I still have more time and I hope to head up into the Drakensbergs to take some shots of the springbok up there: send you a few?

I'd love to see the images.
I'm at the beach now, and will be using the J-3 extensively. I also brought a converted pre-war Sonnar with me. Brought, a Canon P, Leica M8, and Olympus EP2 with the Leica adpater on it.

Finding a late Bacl 50/1.8 with clean glass is not easy. Usually the surface behind the aperture gets etched.
I need to put some of my lenses up for sale... I'm guessing $200 for the 50/0.95 was a pretty good deal.

Somewhat off topic because it is fixed glass but I just doled out $175 for a black Canonet GL17...I sure hope the 40/1.7 is capable of nailing a decent photograph in the right situation and the unit I am getting is in good shape...
Going really off topic here but I can't help but wonder if Panasonic has taken a page from the Canon book of glass with their 20/1.7 ~ 40mm prime with the micro 4/3???

It does give the same FOV, and same F-stop. I like the 40/1.7 Canonet lens, it can give some good results.
