View Full Version : Olympus E-620 and my fit of madness

The new Olympus E-620 is strongly appealing to me. I have fond, fairly recent memories of the OM system. Anyway, I know I shouldn't buy any more cameras, so started I put my Nikon kit up for sale to buy the Oly. Couldn't bring myself to sell that. Then I put my Ikon ZM kit up for sale. That sale lasted about 60 seconds before I took it down .
Just a fit of madness, really!

OMG! I was scared for a moment.
Madness does not begin to fit that description.
There is stuff that I will sell. Sold a lens not too long ago that was too good to be "1 of 6", and it gets more use now than it ever would have with me. But some stuff will be with me for a long time. Like the Zeiss LTM lenses.

I found a great deal on a used Olympus E-420, so I've satisfied my madness without resorting to selling anything :).

No such thing as too many cameras!

I'm beginning to wonder about that. I'm fairly well saturated! Same with lenses. Of course, I have thirty 50mm lenses in LTM alone...

If that's thirty 50mm lenses and each a different design, that is quite impressive!

Most are different. Some are the "the same", but early and later versions that are actually different. Such as a Thorium 5cm F2 Summicron and the version that followed. OR a collapsible Nikkor 5cm f2 and a late "black Rim" 5cm f2. And others are "my own creation", like the uncoated pre-war CZJ Sonnar 5cm f2 in LTM.

I took my dad's G1 out for a day and liked it quite a bit. For most purposes, I liked it better than the Oly E-420. However, every once in a while I would trigger the shutter and miss the moment due to EVF/LCD lag, and that's why I ended up going for the E-420 instead.
Also, I found a like new E-420 and 25mm pancake kit for $400 :).

Amin, there was a discussion a while back on GetDPI about supposed G1 EVF/LCD lag, I'll try to find the thread. I assume you were using the kit lens?

Indeed I was using the kit lens. I'd be interested to see that discussion. Will see whether I can dig it up.

Lol Amin - I'm interested in the 620 too - finally something like the 4xx size with the IS and flippy screen. This time they seem to have finally gotten it into their heads that people want small competent cameras. Unfortunately, it will be for naught without more small primes to go with it, preferably fast ones so here is hoping we see more of those this year. As a plus for waiting for said lenses, the body price will go down nicely.

An Oly E-System body and the pancake would be the bee's knees for me, but I just can't get around the less than stellar performance of that lens, according to what I've read online. Of course, that could incorrect information ... or outdated. The original OM 50/1.8 was not nearly as good as later versions (though it had its charms), and the same could be said of the 50/1.4 versions.
